AIRBRUSH CUSTOM HELMETS PAINTED
BY JO TAYLOR CUSTOM:

MARK's STEP-BY-STEP OF RACE GRAPHICS
SCHEME ON BELL CAR RACING HELMET
STEP 1: DESIGN STAGE
This design incorporates a homage to Jensen Button's helmet designs and was commisioned as a sponsorship behest by our race-driver client ASH SHUTTLEWOOD.

We redesigned the scheme to accommodate the initials: '
AS' and factored in some special effects colour shift sparkle to the black elements and white sparkle-flake to the white elements of the theme to provide a striking counterpoint to the in-your-face fluorescent yellow chartreuse that dominates this bespoke custom airbrush painted race helmet design.
STEP 2
DISMANTLE, PREP + MASK
Ok, having received the helmet from Ash in its original condition, with factory graphics and stickers buried under the clear coat, the first step is to dismantle it.

Which means removing everything that will not be painted such as visor, vents, trims or if it can't be removed .... it's masked with tape.

The shell is then masked to protect the interior and anything else I want to keep paint free.

STEP 3
The next step is to prepare the surface for painting.

As the original factory graphics have raised edges, the whole area is block sanded to give a smooth surface, to which I have then applied two good coats of primer.

This is then is flatted again.

For this particular design, the helmet needed to be white, so I applied a white base coat
.

Over which a WHITE SPARKLE-FLAKE was sprayed adding a touch more 'WOW' factor.
BASECOAT

STEP 4
STEP 5
CREATE THE DESIGN
Accuracy with placement of the fine-line masking tape is crucial to achieving sharp, good-looking graphics.
BASE COLOUR
The white elements of the
design are masked out.
I then sprayed the fluorescent chartreuse.
STEP 6
This step sees the fluorescent areas preserved whilst creating the black elements.

In preperation, a couple of coats of clear was sprayed to protect the fluorescent while it was re-masked to accept the black elements of the design.
MASK TO PROTECT THE FLUORESCENT

The design gets the black fineline elements added

STEP 7

ATTENTION TO DETAIL
I then gave the black a light dusting of “Gem chameleon ruby” which gives a rich sparkle that shifts through RUBY-GOLD-GREEN depending on the angle of the light.

Sparkle shift added over the black

STEP 8

With all of the design masking tape removed and our Logo sprayed onto the chin guard, (in black + colour shift sparkle) the helmet is ready for the final clearcoats.
READY TO CLEAR-COAT
The design has all its colours and special effects completed
CLEARCOAT STAGE
This design incorporates hard edge masking to create the crisp, clean lines of colour and graphics.

Several layers of clearcoat
will need to be applied to 'sink' the edges to acheive a smooth, high gloss, 'SHOW STANDARD' glass finish.

FINAL STEP

POLISH + REASSEMBLE
Once the final clearcoat has hardened sufficiently the helmet is polished to a high gloss finish.

It is then reassembled i.e vents, trims, visor etc..and it's ready for the customer.

The helmet is finished!
TOTAL COST: £ 620 + insured postage @ cost
